Before Christmas 2014, I bought kitenge patchwork quilts from Peace by Piece, which is a small organization of Ugandan tailors in Masindi Town who sew quilts from scraps of leftover kitenge. PCV Rachel Belkin, who helps Peace by Piece as her secondary project, brought back a few of these quilts to Baltimore City where two of my best friends live. They photographed high resolution images of the various kitenge designs and created kitenge mosaics of a giraffe, elephant, pineapple, and crab. They then launched a website where these designs could be ordered online as either a t-shirt or a canvas.
As a result, these kitenge designs have been fused into modern-day designs.
